Concrete removal on Mercer Island
We are a Seattle concrete removal referral service. Tell us what needs to go and we'll connect you with one local concrete removal company — not five.
Mercer Island has two rules that decide when a concrete job can happen. In landslide hazard areas, and on larger jobs in erosion hazard areas, the city does not allow land clearing, grading, filling or foundation work between October 1 and April 1 without a waiver. And work in the street on school days is generally limited to 9 am to 3:30 pm.
Both rules affect scheduling, so check your lot before you book a date. When you are ready, send us the details and photos. We pass your job to one local concrete removal company, and it is free for you to ask.

Check your lot for a geologic hazard
The city maps erosion, landslide and seismic hazard areas, and its geological hazards page links to the city's mapping tool, where you can search by address or parcel number. A geotechnical report is required when work is proposed in landslide, steep slope, seismic or erosion hazard areas, among others.
If your property shows a hazard, mention it to anyone quoting. A driveway breakout that also regrades the subbase, or a patio removal on a slope, is the kind of job where the hazard designation can come into play.
The October 1 to April 1 limit
Mercer Island's wet season page, citing MICC 17.14.010 Section 105.3.1, says land clearing, grading, filling and foundation work "are not permitted between October 1 and April 1 within landslide hazard areas, or if more than 2,000 square feet of disturbance is proposed in an erosion hazard area."
A waiver is possible with "compelling justification" backed by a geotechnical evaluation. The application calls for a letter to the Building Official, a geotechnical report, working drawings, an erosion control plan, a construction schedule and emergency procedures. For a small removal, it is usually simpler to plan the work for spring or summer.
- Landslide hazard area: no clearing, grading, filling or foundation work October 1 to April 1 without a waiver
- Erosion hazard area: the limit applies above 2,000 sq ft of disturbance
Working in the street
Anything that excavates, alters or blocks the street or sidewalk needs a Right of Way Use permit, applied for by email to the city in PDF form with a site plan and, where traffic or pedestrians are affected, a traffic control plan. The city says "work hours are generally 9 am to 3:30 pm in the street on school days," and may be tighter on school bus routes.
For a driveway apron, that is a short day to saw-cut, break and load. Ask how the work will be split if your street is a bus route.
